GEORGE ELLIOTT CLARKE


Born in Windsor, Nova Scotia in 1960, Mr. Clarke is a seventh-generation Canadian of African-American and Mi’kmaq Amerindian heritage. He earned a B.A. Honours in English from the University of Waterloo (1984), an M.A. in English from Dalhousie University (1989) and a Ph.D. in English from Queen’s University (1993). Mr. Clarke now lives in Toronto and began teaching Canadian and African diasporic literature in 1999 at University of Toronto, where he is currently the E.J. Pratt Professor of Canadian Literature.

IAN KETEKU

Calgary
Ian Keteku is a poet, musician and freelance journalist. Born as Ian Nana Yaw Budu Keteku, his birth name mimics his diverse talents and interests. Raised in Canada and of Ghanaian heritage, Keteku earned the title of World Slam Poetry champion in France in the summer of 2010.

IKENNA ONYEGBULA

Nigeria
Born in Nigeria, and raised on three different continents, Ikenna “OpenSecret” Onyegbula has been a spoken word performance poet for five years, having begun competing locally in the Ottawa Poetry Slam scene in the fall of 2007. His work focuses on an array of diverse topics and subject matters from historical biographies to social justice issues, utilizing performance to get into the crux of an ever changing set of circumstances in order to challenge audiences to engage with a vast spectrum of emotions. He has won numerous accolades for his work and has performed all over Canada, the United States and in Europe.

JAMAAL ST JOHN

NEW JERSEY
Jamaal’s illustrious poetic career started at the famed Nuyorican Poets Cafe when he was 18 years old. His contemporaries were Jessica Care moore, Saul Williams, Louis Reyes Rivera, Tish Benson, Suheir Hammad just to name a few. Through many poetic slams, Jamaal paid his dues to earn the opportunity to slam three times in the Grand Slam Finals at the Nuyorican (1996, 1997, 2000). In 2000, Jamaal won the opportunity to slam in Nationals with the Nuyorican to eventually take 3rd place in Providence, Rhode Island.
